Are you ready to become a stylist?

If you are ready to launch your career as a makeup, fashion, hair or photo stylist you will find the following tips and suggestions helpful as you work towards your goals.

 

1. Do your homework. Learn about the industry. Did you know that stylists specialize in many areas? The job requirements are different for someone who works in print from the stylist who works in film.

 

2. Determine the type of work you really want to do. Do you see yourself styling for magazines? Would you love to work on a music video? Do you like the idea of television commercials, soap operas, or film? Are you ready to tour for fashion shows or concerts? There are many areas to consider. Now is the time to try to determine where you want to start.

 

3. Buy the book, “Chrystal Wright’s Hair Makeup & Styling Career Guide. Why? It’s a great book filled with solid and practical information to help you build your portfolio and market yourself as a stylist. (Chrystal Wright also offers a great DVD and Workshop education for stylists).

 

4. Do you need training? Boost your skills and your level of creativity. Take a class or workshop. Work as an assistant or apprentice for another stylist.

5. Know the trends and the history of makeup, hair and fashion. Today’s trends can be inspired by yesterday’s fashion. How would you know unless you have paid attention? What colors are popular this season? How are the colors used? How do the colors in fashion and the colors in makeup relate? How does the hairstyle compliment the look? What accessories are trending? As a stylist you will discover your knowledge of the trends will be invaluable information as you prepare for upcoming assignments.

 

6. Study the magazines and websites for your favorite fashion publications.

 

 

7. Network with other industry professionals.

 

8. Build your portfolio. As a stylist it is important to show diversity of creative concepts and put your best work forward. Begin to collaborate with other industry professionals to work at building your book.
